As we age we naturally begin to see changes in our skin, and our hands are some of the first areas to show strong signs of aging! Daily wear and tear, sun damage, and other lifestyle choices — alongside the natural aging process — can lead to hands that display prominent sunspots, protruding veins, and wrinkles. Fortunately, the latest technology in hyaluronic acid dermal fillers and injectables has led to new treatments to help patients regain youthful-looking hands!

Many patients in their mid-to-late 30s and early 40s begin to notice signs of aging on their hands and other parts of their bodies. As we continue to age we also lose volume. With that loss of fat in our hands, they begin to make our veins and bone structures protrude and look more apparent. With the use of hyaluronic acid fillers like Restylane Lyft, we’re able to restore the volume and help patients regain more youthful-looking hands. For patients with severe sun damage including sun spots and pigmentation, a combination of procedures including fillers alongside laser and chemical peels can prove incredibly beneficial.

The procedure is very well-tolerated, fairly quick, and requires minimal downtime. Board-certified cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Adibfar begins by assessing the hands including the patient’s skin texture, elasticity, and overall quality. A numbing cream or local anesthetic is then used to make the procedure more comfortable. Essentially, the goal is to fill in some of the lost tissue that naturally disappears during the normal aging process and the filler allows the hands to look more youthful and still very natural.

Dr. Adibfar forms a point of entry in the hands for the cannula to insert safely and distribute the filler. Once the filler is injected, Dr. Adibfar softly massages the top of the hands to smooth out the filler and surface, revealing younger, smoother hands. Patients with very apparent veins will find that the filler camouflages the lines brilliantly so that the tendons are less visible. The great thing about these fillers is that they also encourage your body to create collagen. That means that your body will slowly develop its volume stores as the filler begins to wear off.

Patients can return to their daily activities almost immediately after the procedure. Be advised that you will experience slight swelling and it may take up to 7 days for the swelling to completely subside and for you to be able to regain a more natural feeling in your hands. Results can also last anywhere from one year to 18 months and patients are always happy to show off their more youthful, naturally radiant-looking hands.

As we get older the lines on our hands become more pronounced and the front of our hands can certainly give away our age. While we must take care of the skin on other parts of our body including our face, neck, and decolletage, a youthful face and aged hands don’t exactly look synonymous. Regain more youthful-looking skin on your hands with this simple and effective procedure!
